MANAGEMENT TEAM
The firm is managed by its two founders, Robert L. Honstein and Barbara S. Brown. Each has more than 25 years of real asset investment and operating experience, and together they are responsible for investment selection and setting firm investment policy and strategy. The third member of Newlin’s investment team, Adrian Garcia, brings several years of investment experience in addition to 14 years of engineering experience in the petrochemical industry worldwide.
Robert L. Honstein, Senior Managing Director
Prior to forming Newlin in 2003, Mr. Honstein was affiliated with Princeton University’s endowment which he joined in April 1991 to start up a nation-wide real asset investment program. Mr. Honstein actively managed Princeton’s real asset fund and direct investment portfolio for more than ten years. Mr. Honstein also served as Chairman of the Board of Output Exploration Company (“OPEX”) for nine years before the company was sold in 2007. OPEX was a private E&P company based in Houston, Texas that was sponsored by Princeton. In addition to being the former Chairman of OPEX, Mr. Honstein is also a former Director of Affordable Residential Communities and Walden Residential Properties, both NYSE-traded REITs, and of Corporate Realty Investment Company. Before joining Princeton, Mr. Honstein was a partner in a New Jersey real estate development firm. Mr. Honstein earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Vermont, an M.S. in Environmental Engineering from Syracuse University and an M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Honstein is also a licensed professional engineer.
Barbara S. Brown, Senior Managing Director
Ms. Brown joined Newlin in February 2005 as a founding partner and owner in the firm. Previously, Ms. Brown was a Senior Portfolio Manager at Allstate Insurance Company in Chicago where during her 25 year career she focused on real estate investing including ground-up development, direct acquisitions and dispositions, asset management and fund and REIT investments. She and her team were responsible for more than $1 billion in real estate fund commitments to 54 investments with 30+ relationships. Ms. Brown is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she received a B.S. degree in Accountancy and earned an M.B.A. degree from DePaul University in Chicago. She is a former Director of Sunstone Hotel Investors, Inc., a NYSE-traded REIT.
Adrian Garcia, Managing Director
Mr. Garcia joined Newlin in November 2004. Previously, Mr. Garcia worked as an investment strategist for the non-profit business sector of SEI Investments and as a principal for Partners Capital, an investment advisor focused on private equity, hedge fund and real estate investments for high net worth individuals. Prior to his investment career, Mr. Garcia spent 14 years working in the energy and petrochemical industry worldwide, including five years in Saudi Arabia working for Saudi Aramco. Mr. Garcia is a graduate of Stanford University where he received a B.S. in chemical engineering and earned an M.S.E. in operations research and financial engineering from Princeton University. Mr. Garcia is also a licensed professional engineer.
